Protagonists

Cathal Fulcairn – (pronounced "Cahal")The younger son of Cullan, fostered since the age of ten among the Rjuven Yngvi clan. A fierce warrior and unfailingly upright soul. After a harrowing journey to and through the wilds of Rjurik, he returned to Taeghas with a band of Hogun reavers. Now known as "The Black Wolf", he immediately joined the assault on Boeruine's occupation force at Stormpoint. Re-united and reconciled with Cuinn and Mara, he was instrumental in the destruction of The Dragon and her forces. Named Count of Wilder's Gorge after Cuinn's investiture as Duchess of Taeghas, Cathal gave up his sword to her. He promised that he would continue to serve and advise her however she needed, but refused to take another life.
Duchess Cuinn Fulcairn – Leader of the rebellion that sparked the Taeghan War of Independence, freeing Taeghas from servitude to both the realm of Boeruine and the Avanese Empire, and nominated unanimously to lead the newly sovereign nation of Taeghas. Bearer of the Twin Crown, an ancient, coveted artifact whose power is not fully understood. Founder of the Ghosts, the elite forest wardens of Taeghas, though she has handed over their operation to High Warden Adair. Widow to Corrac Fulcairn and beloved daughter-in-law to Cullan, she is finally at ease now that with Aubrae Avan's death, they have truly been avenged.
While her origins are inglorious-- she was a nameless bandit who slew, then usurped, the Rjuven lady Reynhild Andersdottir enroute to her wedding to Corrac --those few who know the truth would agree she has considerably transcended them. Revealed to be a lost daughter of House Valmyrri, kin to Elias Valmyrri.

Mara Fulcairn – Cuinn's court wizard and a Fulcairn through her descent from Melehan. Briefly Magister of Taeghas and holder of the mebhaigl, the land magic of Taeghas, but the title was revoked when Mara disappeared into the Shadow Realm on the eve of the Boeruinese invasion. Intelligent but reckless, Mara was taken under Harald Khorien's protection at a very young age after accidentally burning down her family's farm house. Khorien placed her under the tutelage of Nura, a Khinasi instructor at the Anuirean Academy of mages. Nura helped Mara cultivate a talent in Conjuration and instilled in the young mage a curiosity for ancient elven magics.

Aerona Morgenstane – The youngest of the Morgenstane siblings, a headstrong young woman who ran away from her family after a religious awakening, to join the cult of the thunder god Cuiraecen. Over a decade later, she is sent back to her homeland to answer Cuinn's request to the church of Cuiraecen to send an emissary. She has converted the church of Haelyn in Wilder's Gorge to honour Cuiraecen. She has quickly become a trusted advisor and friend to Cuinn.

House Fulcairn

[Cullan Fulcairn] – Baron of Wilder’s Gorge; a man enervated by the hardships of his rule, Cullan’s grief at the death of his beloved heir has taxed him sorely. Poisoned to death at Corrac’s wake, at the behest of Vulpina Duene. Avenged.

[Corrac Fulcairn] – Widely popular heir to Wilder’s Gorge; a man of intelligence, strength, kindness and wisdom. Beloved husband to Reynhild. Died of a mysterious illness, which eventually was discovered to be necromantic magic cast by a mage in the employ of House Duene. Avenged by Cuinn after the Summer War.

[Melehan Fulcairn] – An ancestor of the Fulcairns, and Mara's direct ancestor. First encountered in a strange vision of the past at the ancient villa in the Seamist Mountains, he guided Mara through dreams and telepathy to the nexuses of power he laid throughout Wilder's Gorge and instructed her in the use of the realm's mysterious magic. After the Fulcairns destroyed the final nexus in the Aelvinnwode, he was physically incarnated, and his magic now holds back Rhuobhe Manslayer from Taeghas' northern border. He successfully achieved the mystical transcendence he sought and has departed the mortal realm.

Wilder's Gorge

Dolan – Man-at-arms. An ex-sellsword sworn to Fulcairn. Valet and confidant to Cathal. Accompanied Cathal on his quest to find Freila Yngvi. Fought bravely, and with great valor, against the Boeruinese at Stormpoint upon his return to Taeghas. Though still at some odds with Cuinn due to a past conflict, Dolan was nonetheless raised to the rank of Knight, made Master at Arms of Stormpoint, and given command of the Ducal forces. Called Dolf by Cathal and the remaining Hogun huscarls.

Nieve Morgenstane-- Eldest of the Morgenstane siblings, an efficient and able administrator in the best tradition of her mercantile-minded family. Has unsettled tensions with her youngest sister Aerona.

[Laurentius]-- A handsome guard captain sent to retrieve the Stone of Unity, by the lord who Tashairah, Dvorak and Gwenevier stole it from. Cuinn hired him away instead, and he serves as her bodyguard and counsel. Slain during the Battle of the Griffon Ascendant.

Dvorak Iron-Tongue – A Dwarf originally of Baruk Azhik, Dvorak left his mountain home while still barely fully bearded, and struck out for the sun-swept jungles of Djafra in the far-east of Khinasi. Never one to stay put, he spent a time in Wilder's Gorge managing its economic needs, and other, covert dealings.

Gwenevier Trevaen – Priestess of Haelyn. A brave, devout, and profoundly good soul, she stayed when all her superiors fled during the Summer War. After the cult of Cuiraecen replaced the Haelynites in Wilder's Gorge, she left to travel the land healing the people where she could.

Dreya – Formerly Cuinn's bodyguard. Originally from Seamist, she stayed after being wounded in the Summer War, was nursed back to health by Gwenevier, and became her devoted lover. Left Cuinn's service to protect Gwenevier.

Callum – Cuinn's Cairnhound. Intelligent, loyal, and bred for both hunting and battle, Cairnhounds are the pride and joy of Wilder's Gorge, and Wilders refuse to sell, breed, or even allow their hounds to breed with dogs from, elsewhere. Callum was gifted to Cuinn as a pup by Corrac, and they are rarely more than arm's length from each other.

[Brinden Blackhawk] - Half-brother to Cathal and Corrac. Cathal and he were close as boys, being nearer in age. Sent on a mission of diplomacy to House Duene of Seamist. Slain, supposedly by brigands in northern Seamist while returning to Fulcairn. In truth, slain by Nyrion Duene; avenged by Cathal.

[Merrec] – Late seneschal of Castle Fulcairn. Elderly and frail, Merrec was nonetheless a loyal servant to the house. Though Lord Cathal respected him and valued his advice, they often disagreed on matters of rule. Passed away peacefully of old age while Cathal, Reynhild, and Mara were summoned to the Imperial City.

Elena – Handmaiden to Cuinn. A big-hearted and optimistic young woman who is devoted to the lady she serves. As sunny of disposition as she is of complexion. Now Matron of the House at the Palace of Griffin's Reach, her tireless good-nature and endless charm have endeared her to all in the palace.

Arturo - A tailor from the Eastern Marches. Claims to have once been a courtier. Fusses incessantly over the Fulcairns' appearances. Has a troubling knowledge of poisons. Has found a lasting friendship with Aerona, who shares his appreciation of fine clothing and decoration.

Finn – Man-at-arms. Castellan of Fulcairn Keep and one of the seven sent to collect Cathal at Stormpoint. Served Fulcairn for decades, but retired when Cuinn took leadership of the House.

Adair Morgenstane– Cuinn's most trusted of her group of rangers. Gruff, silent, and highly efficient. Recruited by Cuinn into the Ghosts, and commands them at Fort Caedmon in her absence. After successfully facing the Grey Wolf, a Boeruinean ranger of great renown, he was granted the rank of High Warden of Taeghas.

[Asha] – Another of Cuinn's rangers. After Reynhild, probably the deadliest archer in Wilder's Gorge. Has recently inherited Brigid's duty to ward the Northwestern forests. Lwcan– One of Cuinn's rangers. Tasked with arguably the most dangerous task in Wilder's Gorge-- patrolling the northern border along the Elfwash. Eccentric, feared, and rarely seen. Helped Reynhild track the Golden Stag, and helped her kill a powerful elven Bladesinger.

[Brigid]--One of Cuinn's rangers. Her sweet, grandmotherly appearance belies her nickname--the Manhunter-- and her reputation for excelling at tracking and dispatching not animal, but human prey. Slain by Rhuobhe's bladesingers while defending Wilder's Gorge.

[Magda] - Man-at-arms. One of Cathal's personal guard. Talented swordswoman and the best rider among the Fulcairn soldiers. Daughter of a farrier. Originally from Three Corners. Did not escape the portal to the Shadow Realm at the Imperial villa in the Seamist Mountains, was transformed into a banshee, and died, despite the party's frantic efforts to save her.

Gadric - With Dolan, the last survivor of both the Battle of the Plateau and the Foray into the Northeast. A hardened veteran who lives for House Fulcairn. Recently risen to the rank of Knight, and given command of Taeghas' foot companies.

Rode a beautiful mount named Temperance, who was killed in the joust at the tournament against the Red Knight. Slain in Alamie while valiantly defending a group of commonfolk from rampaging soldiers. His loss struck a pall across the Fulcairns' hearts, and is one they intend to avenge.

He was granted control of the magical sources of Avan's burgeoning empire. Harald Khorien loved Mara with all his heart, secretly supporting the Fulcairns since Cullan's death. After a fallout with Darien Avan, he secretly withdrew and "disappeared" back to Stormpoint.
